Air-cushioning effect and Kelvin-Helmholtz instability before the slamming of a disk on water

چکیده
A solid plate about to slam onto a water surface makes it presence felt before the actual contact by squeezing out mediating air cushioning layer. This layer has regions of low and high pressures. At point (stagnation) pressure, is deflected away from impactor. While in pressure region, Kelvin-Helmholtz instability initiates suction towards Using new measuring technique we measure such deflections, order 10-300 microns, explain mechanisms driving them.

Bubble effect on Kelvin-Helmholtz’ instability
We derive boundary conditions at interfaces (contact discontinuities) for a class of Lagrangian models describing, in particular, bubbly flows. We use these conditions to study Kelvin-Helmholtz’ instability which develops in the flow of two superposed layers of a pure incompressible fluid and a fluid containing gas bubbles, co-flowing with different velocities. We show that the presence of bubb...
متن کاملBand gaps and the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability.
We consider the linear stability of two inviscid fluids, in the presence of gravity, sheared past each other and separated by a flexible plate. Conditions for exponential growth of velocity perturbations are found as functions of the flexural rigidity of the plate and the shear rate. This Kelvin-Helmholtz instability is then analyzed in the presence of plates with spatially periodic (with perio...
متن کاملOn Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in superfluids
The Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in superfluids is discussed, based on the first experimental observation of such instability at the interface between superfluid He-A and superfluid He-B [1]. We discuss why the Kelvin-Helmholtz criterion, the Landau critical velocity for nucleation of ripplons, and the free energy consideration all give different values for the instability treshold. 1 Classical...
متن کاملKelvin-helmholtz Instability by Sph
In this paper, we have modeled the Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability (KHI) problem of an incompressible two-phase immiscible fluid in a stratified inviscid shear flow with interfacial tension using Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method. The time dependent evolution of the two-fluid interface over a wide range of Richardson number (Ri) and for three different density ratios is numerically inve...
متن کاملOn the Kelvin-helmholtz Instability of the Earth’s Magnetopause
-The effect of the finite thickness of the shear layer on the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability of the Earth’s magnetopause boundary is investigated. The thickness of the layer stabilizes the boundary with respect to short wavelength perturbations, which were previously found to be unstable in the zero thickness analysis. Compressibility effects further stabilize the layer. The effects of the magnet...
